JAGORAWI GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB HISTORY

In the early 1970-ties, Jagorawi Golf & Country Club founder, the late Zakir, had this dream of building the first new-era golf course in what is now commonly known as the Jagorawi Toll Road area.

In 1975, Zakir started negotiating design and construction of such an international standard golf course with no one less than 5-time British Open champion, Peter Thomson.

Assisted by design-partner Michael Wolveridge and golf architect Ronald Fream, in 1976, Thomson made a start with designing and building of the “Garden Course”.

In 1979, it opened the first nine holes for play, only to open the remaining 9 holes in 1981. Situated in former jungle-land in the Cikeas River Valley, today the Garden Course is better known as the “Old Course”, and it is part and parcel of Indonesia’s only golf club that is home to 45 holes of championship golf.

One year prior to completion of the first 9 holes of the Garden Course (Old Course), on March 9, 1978, Indonesia’s first toll road officially opened, connecting Jakarta with the cities of Bogor and Ciawi to the south. This 45km-long thoroughfare was named the Jagorawi toll road, an acronym formed of components of the names of the three cities it connects – Jakarta-Bogor-Ciawi. And appropriately, it gave name to the Jagorawi Golf & Country Club.

The picture on the left shows the early stages of construction of hole #1 of the Old Course in 1976, while the panoramic image below here shows the same hole in present day.
